Dear Colleague,

The NSF East Asia Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) Program provides U.S. graduate students in science and engineering 1) first-hand research experience in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand or Taiwan; 2) an introduction to the science and science policy infrastructure of the respective location; and 3) orientation to the society, culture and language. The primary goals of EAPSI are to introduce students to East Asia and Pacific science and engineering in the context of a research laboratory, and to initiate personal relationships that will better enable them to collaborate with foreign counterparts in the future. The institutes last approximately eight weeks from June to August. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) co-sponsor the Summer Institute in Japan.

The flyer for 2007 is attached and your help is requested by getting this information to as many graduate students and faculty as possible. I have additional posters and letter-sized flyers that I could send you. Please let me know how many and to whom I may send these promotional materials.

EAPSI changes for 2007

• New Zealand is added as an East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) location.
• The Award amount has been amended to reflect the increase in the stipend amount to $4,000.
• Proposal preparation instructions have been clarified.
• Potential host institutions are expanded to include Beijing, Shanghai, Kunming and Xian.

Hi First-year TPP Students,

As we announced at the TPP orientation, Dr. Bill Lehr (his email address is: wlehr@mit.edu) is interested in working with TPPers and willing to meet with interested students either tomorrow or Thursday around 11am. He is a busy person. If you are interested in telecom/Internet and would like to meet with him, please contact him to make an appointment as soon as possible. When you arrange a meeting, please do not forget to let Yoko know, so that she can send your application materials to him.
